Natural Home Remedies for Toothache

Updated on November 1, 2012

A toothache or odontalgia is a very unpleasant feeling, especially when it occurs at time when you are unable to see a dentist like during the night, weekends, holidays...etc. Being unable to do something about the pain is what makes the unpleasant feeling even more unpleasant. While going to the dentist is inevitable, there are a number of natural remedies that can alleviate a toothache. These remedies do not solve the problem, but they are very effective in mitigating the pain:

Toothache occurs as result of tooth decay or a disorder elsewhere in the body. Because the body pumps more blood into the painful area, the pressure on the nerves increases and the pain becomes worse.

Cloves oil and olive oil

Mix a few drops of cloves oil and olive oil on a piece of cotton wool and apply it on the area of the affected tooth three times a day. You can also chew dried cloves, but with healthy teeth. Cloves are very spicy plants and direct contact with the affected tooth can cause even greater problems.Cloves contain eugenol, which is a natural painkiller, antibacterial and disinfects the oral cavity. Other than toothache, cloves and cloves oil are good for asthma, cough, skin diseases, headaches and digestive problems.

Nutmeg powder

Mix half a teaspoon of nutmeg powder with one teaspoon of mustard, sesame oil or coconut oil. Apply the mixture on the affected tooth using cotton wool and leave it on for some time. Then wash your mouth with warm water. Repeat this procedure every two days.Nutmeg contains myristicin, a substance which has sedative effects. Beside toothaches, nutmeg powder also helps in nausea and prevents vomiting and diarrhea

Licorice, ginger and the seeds of cardamom

Mix a pinch of green cardamom seeds powder, licorice and dried ginger. Add a few drops of honey. Then apply the mixture to the surface of the affected tooth and leave it there for a few minutes, then wash your mouth with water.Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a substance with powerful antibiotic activity. Which makes it a perfect remedy against bacteria that cause tooth decay. Ginger has an anti-inflammatory effect, while cardamom disinfects the mouth and kills bad breath.

Barbasco plant/Mexican wild yam tincture

Dilute 30-60 drops of the tincture in a glass of water and drink it three to four times a day. Mexican wild yam tincture is available in herbal stores or online. In addition to easing toothache, plant barbasco also mitigates menstrual pain.

St. John's wort, calendula, and bay leaf

Mix St. John's wort, calendula and bay leaf then add one tablespoon of the mixture to half litter of water, let it boil and leave to sit from 30 to 40 minutes before using as mouthwash.

Cinnamon and Honey

Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth. This can be repeated three times a day, until the toothache is gone.In addition to helping with the toothache, studies have shown that regular use of cinnamon reduces bloodsugar and blood fats. It is also useful to promote digestion and protect against free radicals.

Garlic

Garlic has antibiotic analgesics and anesthetics properties, which are all beneficial against toothache. To relieve pain, put a bit of crushed garlic on the aching tooth. You can also apply garlic juice, using cotton wool, on the sore spot of the cheek and hold for several minutes.

Alcohol

Alcohol, especially brandy and cognac are famous folk remedies against toothache. Alcohol is great disinfectant which relieves inflammation by destroying clusters of bacteria that causes it. To relieve a toothache, wash your mouth several times with alcohol.

Vanilla

To relieve a toothache using vanilla, apply a few drops of vanilla extract on the affected tooth. Vanilla also helps with spasms in the stomach and inhaling the scent of vanilla effectively relaxes and removes stress.

Lavender and vinegar

Add one teaspoon of lavender to 100ml of vinegar and hold in your mouth for several minutes, then spit it out. PS: Do not swallow this mixture.

Salt

Add a few teaspoons of salt to a glass of warm water (warm water is necessary to dissolve the salt) and wash your mouth with it for about two minutes. PS: Do not swallow this solution. You can also use salt as external remedy by mixing half a teaspoon of salt with half a teaspoon of aluminum sulfate and then with a cotton wool, apply on the aching tooth.
