Healthy and Safe Sunlight Exposure
62The sun’s rays are necessary for a healthy life. Without exposing our bodies to sun, our bones would be weak and unhealthy, and vitamin D levels in our body would be too low. Too much sun can damage our skin, and increase the risk of getting a skin cancer.
Unfortunately, the inhabitants of most developed countries have a growing rate of vitamin D deficiency.
Sunscreen with SPF 15, reduces the production of vitamins in the skin by 99.9%.
But what then is more important: protection from the sun and prevention of skin cancer, or enough vitamin D?
For a body to produce a sufficient amount of vitamin D, it is recommended to expose your body to the sun unprotected three times a week for no more than 15 minutes. And of course, always avoid the midday sun. This way, you will ensure enough vitamin D production in your body without causing any damage to your skin.
Staying in the shade is not a solution, because although we feel colder in the shade than under the sun, the shade still contains from 50 to 90% UV-radiation.
